Thank you for your input in bringing my article on Jeptha Atherton to life ! Adin-Atherton (talk) 14:05, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
Jeptha was probably born in Colonial America. Some sources say Bermuda... I am actively researching. He married three times. As transcribed in Knorr's "Marriages of Southampton Co. VA", Jeptha married Sarah Tynes September 13th, 1760. A little more than two years later, according to the same source, he married Elizabeth “Betsy” (nee Thorpe), the widow of Thomas Jarrett of St. Luke's Parish on March 11th, 1763 in Southampton, VA. Penelope Pruden / Prudden (d. 1768) was I believe his third wife.
Children:
Penelope (Atherton) Brunson
Temperance Atherton
Elizabeth Dorothy (Atherton) Dawson
Mary (Atherton) Bynum
Frances Atherton (1770-1830) who married Gideon Alston (1765-1831)

Phrasing of ref names
[edit]Hi there, having just fixed some ref issues at William Thomson (military officer), I wanted to drop you a line about the proper format for ref names. In future, please use quote marks in ref names, not the apostrophe. (<ref name="Jones"> is correct; <ref name='Jones'> is not.) This probably seems like a silly distinction, especially given that ref name='Jones' DOES work fine in practice. The problem is that when using ref names of more than one word, such as ref name='Jones page 43', it doesn't work, resulting in broken formatting. Using single quotes also inadvertently spreads wrong ideas to newer editors who may emulate it and then not understand why their formatting doesn't always work. In general it's just good practice to use the proper format, quote marks, ". Thanks! Jessicapierce (talk) 17:48, 25 June 2019 (UTC)
- I had no idea it was supposed to be quote vice apostrophe. I guess I was just emulating what I saw.

I am trying to figure out why there are categories for both Category:Plantations in North Carolina and Category:Plantation houses in North Carolina. The structure same structure seems to be used for all U.S. state. The categories are managed by the Agriculture group and not the U.S. History group. Looking at other states, sometimes users put the article on a plantation or plantation house in one category and sometimes in another. It would help with consistency and being able to view results on map links to have all the articles about plantations or plantation house in the same category. Most of the articles start with the National Register of Historic Places. A few articles go beyond what is derived from these sources. My preference would be put all of the articles in the category:Plantations of "State", but this should probably be done consistently across all states. I am not sure if there is a forum to discuss this. I don't think agriculture is the right place
User:G._Moore talk 23:13, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
- I'm not sure where you get the Agriculture group from; both categories' talk pages merely point to WP:WikiProject United States and the North Carolina WikiProject. Since this issue concerns multiple states, WT:WikiProject United States looks like a good place to discuss it. Huon (talk) 00:02, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
Your GA nomination of William Woods Holden
[edit]Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article William Woods Holden you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of G. Moore -- G. Moore (talk) 05:20, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
- G. Moore, as the person who nominated this article as a GAN (Good Article Nomination) six days ago, you may not also open the GA review. Reviews are only opened by people who have not nominated the article and have not made significant contributions to the article. I strongly recommend that you review the GA nomination instructions page in its entirety so you understand the whole GAN process. In the meantime, I will be nominating the review page you created for a speedy deletion, since any reviewer would need to create a new page with the same name, and they can't do so with your mistakenly created page in the way. William Woods Holden
[edit]I've taken another look at the Earwig report for the Holden article (I honestly forgot about the GA review for awhile). Another editor came through and removed the statement that needed a citation, so that's not an issue anymore. One sentence appears to be closely paraphrased - "Throughout the 1840s and 1850s, Holden advocated for Southern rights to expand slavery and sometimes supported the right of secession, but by 1860 he had shifted his position to support the Union." Can you just rephrase this a little? I'm still confused on the Carolana issue - It's very close but I'm going to try to dig into that some more. I'm taking it off second opinion and on hold. I would like you to look at some other minor edits another user made to see if you approve. Hog Farm (talk) 14:26, 8 April 2020 (UTC)
- Carolana's a mirror - The Carolana page states that it's from 2007, and it appears to be almost identical to the first 2007 revision of Wikipedia. In this case, I won't support it as a reliable source. Using it as a ref is just circling back to the '07 version of Wikipedia and using it as a source. Hog Farm (talk) 14:32, 8 April 2020 (UTC)
- Are you still interested in continuing this review, or should I fail the nomination? It's been going on for a couple months now. Hog Farm (talk) 15:21, 9 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Hog Farm: If we don't use Carolan as a source, then we would have to cite the historical records of North Carolina legislatures, which this information was derived from. That will take some work and time to do it. If we cite the legislative documents, would that be citing original sources? If so, we would have to find other sources that used these original sources. The facts are not in dispute but need specific citations. I am currently putting a lot of effort on the WikiProject Hospitals to support the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. It might be good to delay this until someone gets time to spend on the sourcing. G. Moore 15:32, 9 April 2020 (UTC)
- Primary sources are acceptable, if used in moderation. I see no issues with using that. How about this, which I've offered to another editor in a similar situation: I'll fail the nomination now, you can pick it back up when you have the time and renominate, and then I'll get to the renomination to finish it off as soon as I can. Would that be acceptable to you? There's been a push about leaving GAN reviews open for a long time, because the page almost broke a couple weeks ago because there were more noms than the bot can handle. Hog Farm (talk) 16:12, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

River elevations
[edit]Good day, G. Moore. The North Shore streams which flow to Lake Superior should show elevations at their mouths at the level of Lake Superior itself. The lake elevation has fluctuated, but no more than a few feet. I understand the mean elevation is 600'.
Regards, Kablammo (talk) 14:47, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Kablammo: Thanks for the catch. I changed them all to the elevation of Lake Superior and put the GNIS elevation in a note. I will also check the other rivers going into lakes. -- Talk to G Moore 17:49, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Fishing pool
[edit]Hi. Could You help me describing (in simple words) what a fishing pool on river is? I'm searching something similar to [1]. User:Paelius 18:05, 12 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Paelius: A fishing pool is a Stream pool, where fish can be found. There is a good definition in the article Stream pool: A stream pool, in hydrology, is a stretch of a river or stream in which the water depth is above average and the water velocity is below average. An extreme example is Lake Pepin on the Mississippi River. I have often observed stream pools in rivers and streams. The fish like to congregate downstream of riffles in stream pools because there is abundant food, clear water, high oxygenation, and cold temperatures in deeper water. It is usually just referred to as a pool, vice fishing pool. -- Talk to G Moore 18:58, 12 July 2021 (UTC)
- Thank You. User:Paelius 19:58, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

Help needed please
[edit]Hi, I have sent you an email with details needed regarding [2].Anne (talk) 08:59, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Arbil44: I depend on J.D. Lewis's research which you linked to above. You might try sending J.D. the question. He has responded to one of the roadblocks I had before. The other option is to search the Colonial Records of North Carolina that contain a lot of good information. I assume that you have looked at NCPedia, also. These are the sources that I most often used in researching the North Carolina Revolutionary War militia units. Do you have a connection to North Carolina? Good luck in your research.
-- Talk to G Moore 23:47, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
Thank you. Yes, I've been in touch with J.D. Lewis, but he knows nothing, unfortunately. I don't have a connection myself, but I badly need to find much more on Colonel John Gregory, who is proving to be the invisible man! Anne (talk) 23:59, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

Invitation to take part in a survey about medical topics on Wikipedia
[edit]Dear fellow editor,
I am Piotr Konieczny, a sociologist of new media at Hanyang University (and User:Piotrus on Wikipedia). I would like to better understand Wikipedia's volunteers who edit medical topics, many associated with the WikiProject Medicine, and known to create some of the highest quality content on Wikipedia. I hope that the lessons I can learn from you that I will present to the academic audience will benefit both the WikiProject Medicine (improving your understanding of yourself and helping to promote it and attract new volunteers) and the wider world of medical volunteering and academia. Open access copy of the resulting research will be made available at WikiProject's Medicine upon the completion of the project.
All questions are optional. The survey is divided into 4 parts: 1 - Brief description of yourself; 2 - Questions about your volunteering; 3 - Questions about WikiProject Medicine and 4 - Questions about Wikipedia's coverage of medical topics.
Please note that by filling out this questionnaire, you consent to participate in this research. The survey is anonymous and all personal details relevant to your experience will be kept private and will not be transferred to any third party.
I appreciate your support of this research and thank you in advance for taking the time to participate and share your experiences! If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at my Wikipedia user page or through my email listed on the survey page (or by Wikipedia email this user function).
The survey is accessible through the LINK HERE.

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.
- AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
- The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.
Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. File source problem with File:Alice Campbell at Campbell House.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Alice Campbell at Campbell House.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
If the necessary information is not added within the next seven days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Felix QW (talk) 21:43, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
Image source problem with File:Campbell House Iredell NC.jpg
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:Campbell House Iredell NC.jpg.
This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.
If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F4 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 15:59, 16 December 2022 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Felix QW (talk) 15:59, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
